The purpose of IEC62056 is to establish standards, by
reference to other ISO/OSI Standards, necessary for data exchanges by different
communication media, for automatic meter reading, tariff and load control, and
consumer information. The media can be distribution line carrier (DLC),
telephone (including ISDN), radio, or other electrical or optical system. Any
of these media may be used for local or remote data exchange.
