The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is an application
layer protocol used to copy files from one computer to another. It belongs to the
TCP/IP protocol suite and is defined in RFC959 with updates in RFC2228,
RFC2640, and RFC2773.
FTP can be used directly by a user at a terminal or
by a program. Although it has been around for a very long time
(Internet-speaking-wise), it is still very frequently used to upload or
download files over the Internet or Intranet networks. FTP uses the Telnet
protocol on the control connection.
